Our Story
Welcome to Cape-able Kids!
I'm Kathleen Gillis, a Pediatric Occupational Therapist, and I couldn't be more excited to be bringing Cape-able Kids home to Nova Scotia.
Although my career has taken me across the country, my heart has always remained here. After spending nearly 20 years building my career in Alberta, I am thrilled to return home and provide occupational therapy services to the children and families of Nova Scotia.
Over the past two decades, I have had the privilege of working with hundreds of children in schools, homes, clinics, and community settings. My experience has allowed me to support children with a wide range of developmental, sensory, emotional, behavioural, and physical needs while working closely with families, educators, physicians, psychologists, speech-language pathologists, physiotherapists, and other professionals.
Throughout my career, one thing has remained constant: children do their very best when they feel safe, understood, and supported. My greatest passion is helping families understand why their child is struggling and providing practical, meaningful strategies that make everyday life easier.
Returning home isn't just about opening a clinic—it's about giving back to the communities that helped shape who I am. It is an honour to bring my experience home and support the next generation of Cape Breton children and families.
Our Approach
Our approach is relationship-based, trauma-informed, family-centred, and evidence-informed.
We understand that behaviour is communication. Rather than asking, "What's wrong with this child?" we ask, "What is this child trying to tell us?" We look beyond behaviours to understand each child's nervous system, sensory needs, developmental abilities, environment, and unique experiences.
We recognize that every family is different. There is no one-size-fits-all therapy plan. Together, we develop practical strategies that fit naturally into your family's routines and priorities.
Our services focus on helping children build confidence and independence in everyday life, including:
Sensory processing and self-regulation
Emotional regulation and coping skills
Fine motor skills and handwriting
Feeding and mealtime challenges
Complex feeding issues (medical and sensory based).
Toileting and self-care independence
Sleep routines and healthy sleep habits
Executive functioning and daily routines
Gross motor skills and coordination
School readiness and classroom success
Autism and neurodiversity-affirming supports
Parent coaching and caregiver education
Therapy should never feel like extra work for families. Instead, we aim to make everyday routines—getting dressed, brushing teeth, eating meals, getting ready for school, bedtime, and playtime—opportunities for learning and success.
Our Mission is simple:
To help children become more confident, capable, and independent while supporting the families who love and care for them.
We believe every child has unique strengths. Our role is to build on those strengths, reduce barriers, and help children participate more fully in the activities that are meaningful to them.
Whether your child is learning to tolerate new foods, sleep through the night, become toilet trained, improve their handwriting, regulate big emotions, or navigate the sensory demands of everyday life, we're here to support your family every step of the way.
At Cape-able Kids, we celebrate progress—not perfection.
Because every child deserves the chance to feel capable, and every family deserves compassionate support along the journey.
